Gallery 1028 - Steam locomotives at Anshan

The steel city of Anshan was, in 1985, a mecca for railway enthusiasts from all over the world. The large scale use of steam locomotives in China with new ones stull under construction meant that much of the northern part of the country saw intensive steam operation of both freight and passenger trains. True the use of steam for express passenger trains was over, but with some of the locos used for the prestige servives relegated to more humble duties there was still much to see. The images in this set were taken on a bitterly cold day in Novemner. As with many industrial cities in China, the morning saw the sun struggle to penetrate the smog. However as the day progressed the light improved and was almost perfect for photography.
